Bridging Academic Learning and Community Needs: A Project-Based Learning-Based Drainage Planning Initiative for Sustainable Development Goal 6

This paper examined the implementation of a community service program based on a Project-Based Learning (PBL) framework to support rural infrastructure planning while highlighting its pedagogical and practical contributions. The study adopted a qualitative, practice-based approach to document and reflect on activities conducted in Rejosari Village, Bojong, Pekalongan Regency. The program was initiated in response to a request from the village government to address recurring waterlogging problems through the development of a drainage system plan. The program was implemented through several stages, including initial discussions with village officials, joint site surveys, on-site problem identification, collaborative analysis, design development, cost estimation, and the formal handover of technical drawings and budget plans. The process emphasized participatory engagement, field-based learning, and iterative design, involving both lecturers and students in direct interaction with the community. The results indicated that the program generated tangible benefits for both students and the community. Students gained experiential learning opportunities by applying theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges while developing critical-thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. For the community, the program provided a practical and context-sensitive drainage design that could serve as a reference for future infrastructure development. The findings demonstrated that community-based PBL could be effectively implemented in rural contexts and could bridge academic learning with practical application. The study also provided a replicable framework for integrating education, community engagement, and infrastructure planning to support sustainable rural development.

Evidence-Based Approaches to Improving Rural Livelihood Programs in Vietnam: A Systematic Review

Rural livelihoods in Vietnam have undergone substantial transformation since the Đổi Mới reforms, shaped by livelihood diversification, microfinance expansion, agricultural extension, migration, and targeted poverty-reduction programs for ethnic minority and mountainous communities. Despite extensive empirical literature, a systematic synthesis connecting these intervention domains to livelihood outcomes remains limited. Objective: This systematic review synthesizes peer-reviewed evidence on the effectiveness of livelihood diversification strategies, financial inclusion, agricultural extension, climate adaptation measures, and targeted poverty-reduction programs in improving rural livelihoods in Vietnam. Methods: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework, a structured search of web-based academic sources was conducted. Sixty-three records were identified, of which 22 peer-reviewed journal articles with assigned digital object identifiers met the eligibility criteria and were included in the qualitative synthesis. Results and Discussion: Included studies were concentrated in six thematic categories, with climate vulnerability and adaptation studies the most numerous (n = 6), followed by off-farm employment and migration/remittance studies (n = 4). The majority of studies reported predominantly positive associations between livelihood diversification, microcredit access, and off-farm participation and household welfare outcomes, although climate-related and ethnic-minority-targeted studies more frequently reported mixed or context-dependent effects. Conclusion: Evidence-based rural livelihood programming in Vietnam should integrate financial inclusion, agricultural extension, and off-farm diversification with context-sensitive, climate-adaptive design, particularly for ethnic minority and mountainous populations where programme effects remain heterogeneous.

Entrepreneurship and Economic Empowerment: Incubation, Small and Medium Enterprise Development, and Cooperative Models for Sustainable Community Wellbeing

Entrepreneurship is widely recognized as a key mechanism for economic empowerment, contributing to job creation, poverty reduction, and sustainable community development. However, many entrepreneurial initiatives face persistent challenges that limit their long-term success, including limited access to finance, weak managerial capacity, poor market integration, and inadequate institutional support. This review synthesizes existing literature on five interconnected dimensions of entrepreneurship development: business incubation and startup ecosystems, small and medium enterprise (SME) development, modern marketing strategies, financial literacy, and cooperative models. The study highlights how incubators and accelerators enhance early-stage venture success through mentorship, funding access, and innovation support, while SMEs serve as the backbone of national and local economies despite structural constraints such as financing gaps and regulatory barriers. In addition, digital marketing and branding strategies are identified as critical tools for market expansion, whereas financial literacy strengthens entrepreneurial decision-making, sustainability, and resilience. Cooperative models further provide inclusive pathways for community-based economic empowerment through shared ownership, risk reduction, and social capital formation. By integrating these dimensions, the review emphasizes the importance of a holistic entrepreneurial ecosystem that supports both individual enterprise growth and collective economic wellbeing. The findings suggest that coordinated policy interventions and capacity-building initiatives are essential to foster sustainable entrepreneurship and inclusive economic development across diverse socio-economic contexts.

Innovation in Addressing Youth Unemployment in Developing Countries: Evidence and Pathways from Indonesia

Youth unemployment remains one of the most persistent development challenges facing low- and middle-income countries, and Indonesia, home to one of the world's largest youth populations, illustrates both the scale of the problem and the range of innovation-based responses being tested to address it. This review synthesizes peer-reviewed evidence on how digital technology, vocational and educational innovation, entrepreneurship ecosystems, and policy instruments have been mobilized to reduce youth joblessness in developing-country contexts, with Indonesia as the primary reference case. Drawing on 25 journal publications, the review organizes findings around four innovation pathways: (1) digital and technology-driven innovation, including platform work, e-commerce, and financial technology; (2) skills development and vocational innovation, including technical and vocational education and training (TVET) reform and government-sponsored digital skilling; (3) entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystems, including youth digital entrepreneurship and business incubation; and (4) policy and institutional support mechanisms. The review finds that innovation-based interventions generate measurable, though uneven and often short-run, improvements in youth labour-market outcomes, and that their effectiveness is conditioned by structural factors such as the rural-urban digital divide, gender disparities, and the quality of institutional coordination. The review concludes with policy implications and a research agenda for strengthening the evidence base on innovation-driven youth employment strategies in developing countries.

Entrepreneurship Incubation in the Philippines: A Systematic Review of Programs, Performance, Challenges, and Future Directions

Entrepreneurship incubation has emerged as a cornerstone strategy for nurturing technology-based startups and fostering innovation-driven economic development across Southeast Asia. In the Philippines, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and other public-private institutions have built a growing network of Technology Business Incubators (TBIs) since the 1990s, significantly expanding their scope and impact by the 2020s. This systematic review synthesizes empirical literature, policy documents, and program evaluations to examine the evolution, structural composition, performance outcomes, and systemic challenges of entrepreneurship incubation in the Philippine context. Drawing on 40 peer-reviewed journal articles, the review identifies four thematic domains: (1) the historical development and policy architecture of Philippine incubation programs; (2) the operational characteristics and absorptive capacity of university-linked TBIs; (3) critical success factors and key barriers; and (4) comparative analysis with regional peers and future strategic recommendations. The review finds that while the Philippine TBI ecosystem has demonstrated measurable progress in startup graduation rates, intellectual property outputs, and job creation, structural challenges, including funding fragmentation, urban bias, gender gaps, and limited post-incubation support, continue to constrain its full potential. Actionable directions for policy reform, inclusive incubation models, and digital transformation are proposed.
